Triage System Update – (data up to 30/4/25)
Since introducing the triage system on 27th January 2025, demand for GP appointments has remained extremely high. We can offer a maximum of 208 appointments per week, but current demand exceeds 256.
We’re often asked why we don’t just hire more GPs. The reality is:
- Funding – There simply isn’t enough money in general practice budgets to fund new roles, despite recent increases.
- Recruitment challenges – Hiring GPs in the Purbecks is especially difficult.
What issues are we seeing?
- Lack of information – Please give as much detail as possible when submitting a request. This helps the triaging GP make the right decision.
- Disagreement with outcomes – We understand some outcomes may not be what you hoped for, but GPs make decisions based on all available information. They also regularly review cases together to stay consistent. If your symptoms change or worsen, submit a new form with updated details.
How you can help:
- Before submitting a form, consider other services:
- Pharmacists – Can treat many minor conditions and prescribe medication, including antibiotics. See: NHS England » Pharmacy First.
- First Contact Physio, Mental Health Practitioner, Social Prescriber – is your problem more suited to one of these professionals? Contact reception directly to book with them; no need for an online form.
